Sperm Extraction
When sperm cannot move through a man's genital
tract because of blockage, they can be surgically extracted from
the epididymis or testicular tissue, where they are
stored.
Procedures to achieve this include:
- Microsurgical Epididymal Sperm Aspiration
(MESA)
- Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TESA)
- Testicular Sperm Extraction
(TESE)
A urologist or andrologist usually performs these procedures. The
patient is usually placed under conscious sedation in the doctor's
office, although TESE, which involves a small incision, may be
performed in an operating room.
