Exercise

The health benefits of exercise are seemingly endless. The most commonly cited ones include lowering the incidences of heart attack, stroke, colon cancer and type 2 diabetes, while strengthening bones, muscles and joints and helping to control weight. Nevertheless, we live in a society that is growing increasingly obese and sedentary. A recent National Health Survey in the US revealed that almost 40% of adults reported no participation in a leisure-time physical activity.

For the couple undergoing infertility treatment, exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle that will maximize your chances of success. Other elements include proper nutrition, reducing your intake of alcohol and caffeine, and kicking the habit of smoking.
Experts say that the health benefits of exercise can be enjoyed with as little as 30 minutes of moderate exercise (e.g. walking) or 20 minutes of vigorous exercise (e.g. jogging) every day. Exercise is also a key element in maintaining proper weight, another factor that influences fertility.

As it is often easier to find the motivation for exercise when there is another person participating, try talking your partner into joining you. Examples of activities that you can do together include jogging, biking, tennis and golf. Extreme sports such a marathon running, however, should be avoided, as they can result in reduced sperm production in men and irregular ovulation in women.

Finally, exercise can play a critical role in heightening your sense of well-being and reducing the level of stress in your life, another factor that influences your chances of having a baby.
