Alcohol and Marijuana
While medical authorities agree that excessive
consumption of alcohol can impair fertility, it's still unclear
what the effect of moderate consumption is. The same applies to
marijuana. Health care providers often advise couples to err on the
side of caution with regard to substances that could potentially
impair their chances of conceiving.
Some studies suggest that the more alcohol a woman consumes beyond
one or two drinks per day, the lower her chances of becoming
pregnant. A Danish study, published in 1998, suggests that while
women with high alcohol consumption take longer to become pregnant,
no studies had indicated that moderate drinking significantly
impairs female fertility. On the other hand, a study published in
Fertility and Sterility revealed decreased fertility in women who
had an average of only one drink per day.
New research does indicate
that marijuana use not only inhibits the ability of sperm to
fertilize eggs, but that high concentrations of THC (the
psychoactive ingredient in marijuana) may cause structural damage
in sperm as they fuse with a woman's egg. Most studies, however,
involved "heavy" marijuana users, and some researchers say it's
still unclear how occasional marijuana use might impact
fertility.
Researchers say there's little doubt that heavy alcohol and/or
marijuana use can impair a couple's chances of conception, since
heavy use can reduce desire and sexual function.
