Seeing Your Doctor

What type of doctor should you see?

There are three main types of doctors or physicians that can diagnose and or treat fertility related conditions. Depending on the way your local healthcare health system works, you may require a referral from you primary care doctor (GP) or be able to go directly to a fertility specialist (Reproductive Endocrinologist).

It is important to note that the sooner you see a fertility specialist the better. These doctors are up to date on the latest advances in treatments and can assist you faster.

For Women

A woman can be treated for fertility related conditions by any of the following types of doctors:
  1. Family Doctor (GP): Your primary care or family doctor or physician can assist you in understanding your options and will likely refer you to a specialist who will be able to deal with your fertility more appropriately. Your primary care doctor coordinates and oversees your care, as this doctor is treating your entire body - not just your reproductive system.
  2. Obstetrician/Gynaecologist: An obstetrician/gynaecologist (also referred to as an OB/GYN) is a medical doctor with additional years of specialty training in women's health. In some cases, the OB/GYN may be your primary care physician.
  3. Fertility Specialist: A fertility specialist or reproductive endocrinologist is an OB/GYN who has trained even further, in the area of reproductive medicine. These doctors are specialized to diagnose and treat reproductive problems and perform advanced reproductive techniques, such as IVF. And importantly, they are usually up to date on the latest advances in this area.
For Men

For routine examinations, men can generally see their family doctor. A man having a problem with his prostate or infertility may be referred to a urologist for evaluation.
