History of Serono in Fertility

Serono and Reproductive Health

Serono is the global leader in infertility treatment, with over 60% market share and the most widely prescribed gonadotropin in the world, GONAL-f™ (recombinant human follicle stimulating hormone - r-hFSH).

The Company's goal is to build on its portfolio by providing innovative therapies across the reproductive cycle, from pituitary down-regulation and ovarian stimulation, through to early pregnancy.

As the only Company with a complete recombinant product portfolio supported by a strong research pipeline, Serono will extend its leadership position and will continue to offer efficacious, safe and patient-friendly treatment solutions.

Historic Milestones

It has been over fifty years since the first human gonadotropin was extracted and purified for use in infertility treatment. During the last 50 years, Serono has refined its purification techniques to produce drugs that have become the corner stone of infertility treatment.

The development of these sophisticated purification techniques prepared Serono for its focus on biotechnology and the subsequent production of recombinant gonadotropins in the 1980s and the development of the revolutionary Filled by Mass manufacturing method.
The future: R&D pipeline

Serono has an extensive research and development (R&D) pipeline. The Company’s scientific endeavours seek to keep Serono at the forefront of reproductive medicine by continually refining and increasing the comprehensive range of therapeutic products to help couples experience the joy of parenthood.
